Here at Beyond the Stigma,

I recognize the courage it takes to seek help.

My Story:

I realized in my late twenties, when I was diagnosed with anxiety, that I was afraid to discuss the struggles I was feeling or seek treatment for my debilitating panic attacks because I was in leadership in my Christian church and the people around me did not understand what I was facing. I chose to suffer in silence because of the STIGMA surrounding conditions like mine.

I had heard all the well-meaning statements, you know them… “be anxious for nothing” or “don’t worry about tomorrow, but seek first His kingdom”, or “cast your cares on Him”, or “He will not allow the righteous to be shaken”. While these are beautiful truths in the right context, what I heard in my silent suffering was… you just need to pray more, have more faith, or put God first… when in reality, individuals with mental health conditions often require treatment just like someone diagnosed with diabetes.

It was during my years of silent struggle I purposed in my heart to change the stigma surrounding mental health.
